CHAPTER 4
Kindred Souls
Deep down inside, no matter what the other Flae thought, Shanica knew male Flae existed, somewhere. She had to find them.
The Flae were almost immortal. The word almost was the key here, because one by one the Flae were slowly dying. They lived longer than most of the mutants but there were still accidents and disappearances. They were also getting old, and procreation was impossible without the males. Shanica, a second generation Flae, had not seen the catastrophe. Soon after, most of the males died or disappeared. She believed that disappeared was the word to use; at least one had to have survived.
It had been a close call for Shanica and Tintle at the edge of Contraphobe, and Shanica vowed when she returned to the temple she would take classes on levitation.
They were nearing the Gumbot village. She could see in the distance the new half-built temple. A little trepidation set in as Shanica thought about being with her kind again. She felt uncomfortable around her own species, because her mindset was so different from others. The other Flae teased her severely. Shanica and Tintle now rounded the last bend of the road leading into the temple. The Flae residing there, immediately telepathically greeted them as they passed through the outer gate. She tuned in on the chatter of minds. Shanica entered the temple and walked into the sanctuary. "There it was, the usual. The Flae were the most vain mutants of the lot; they were always gloating about the amount of things they created that day. Each time a Flae would chatter, the numbers would rise. Who cared who did what? The Flae kept the mutants alive, the barren land didn't allow them to fend for themselves."
Not born with the ability to use the power of creation like the second generation Flae, the first generation had to train themselves to use it. They could create anything non-living; like meat but not a live animal. They could create fruit and vegetables but not the plants they grew on. The Flae could levitate and heal but could not bring anyone back from the dead.
